How to: encode video for desktop and mobile playback

While the mobile player is capable of displaying video, only videos of a particular format and size can successfully playback. Here are some tips and important points on the topic.

FLV, no. H.264, yes.

If your videos are encoded using FLV or F4V they will not be viewable in the mobile player. The only solution for this is to convert your videos to the H.264 video codec (see below). H.264 is viewable in the Flash Player, so by converting to H.264 your videos will be accessible in both the Flash-based SlideShowPro player as well as the mobile player. But Adobe's FLV/F4V are only viewable in the Flash Player and nothing else. For this reason we always recommend encoding with H.264 for greatest flexibility.

One video

Because the same video you upload will be delivered to both the desktop (where it's loaded by the Flash Player) and to mobile devices, it's important that your video is encoded to work on both. Mobile devices impose limits on video size and bitrate, so videos should be encoded for its specifications. We provide a suggested universal profile below that will look great on both the desktop and on all mobile devices.

FFmpeg

Another important point concerning video is FFmpeg support. You can check your "System status" page (link at top right of Director) to see if FFmpeg support is available to you. If it is, Director will automatically create thumbnails and previews for your videos when uploaded (which you can edit to a different keyframe or replace with something else if you want thereafter). If not, you will be responsible for uploading you own video thumbnail and preview images.

Encoding software

If you don't already have a preferred video encoding application, we recommend downloading HandBrake. It's free for both Mac and Windows and is easy to use.

Recommended universal H.264 encoding profile

As explained earlier, videos must be encoded using a profile that is compatible with mobile smartphones. The setting below will create a good quality video that will universally work across everything:

Video: H.264, Level 3.0, Baseline profile
Audio: AAC, 1-2 channels
Auto Bitrate: 128 (or less)
Audio Sample Rate: 44100 (or less)
Size: 480x320
Max Framerate: 30
Video Bitrate: 1500 (or less)
Web optimized: Enable fast internet startup, a.k.a "Prepare for internet streaming", "Compressed headers", etc.

For even better quality on the iPhone 4G, iPad, new iPod Touch, and Droids, you may increase the video resolution to 640x480. This may prevent the video from working on some older Android phones though, if that's an issue.

Adobe Media Encoder

If you have Adobe Media Encoder (ships with Creative Suite and bundled apps), we recommend using the "Apple iPod" or "Apple iPod Widescreen" settings. When using the "Widescreen" option, change the preset's width to 480 or 640 (see above).
